Plain radiographs, also known as X-rays, represent the most common form of imaging obtained in medical settings, whether in a hospital or a local practice. To properly interpret these images, one must understand the underlying imaging technique and the standard views obtained.

The standard setup for plain radiography, with the exception of chest radiography, positions the X-ray tube 1 meter away from the X-ray film. The object of interest, such as a hand or foot, is placed upon the film. In describing subject placement for radiography, the part of the body closest to the X-ray tube is referred to first, and the part closest to the film is referred to second. For instance, in an Anteroposterior (AP) radiograph, the anterior part of the body is closest to the X-ray tube, and the posterior part is closest to the film.

This particular positioning plays a crucial role in determining the image’s perspective and is critical in identifying anatomical structures correctly and spotting potential abnormalities.

In terms of viewing X-rays, standard practice places the right side of the patient’s image to the observer’s left. Thus, when viewing the radiograph, it’s as though the observer is looking at the patient in the anatomical position. This convention is crucial for consistent and accurate image interpretation, as it maintains uniformity in viewing, irrespective of the observer or the location.
